Studies in Noticing
A self-guided practice in seeing, sensing, and slowing down
Studies in Noticing is a self-initiated zine project designed to guide people through the practice of slowing down, paying attention, and recognizing beauty in their immediate surroundings.
Originally created for a company retreat on a rocky coastal beach near Vancouver, the zine functions as both a narrative and a prompt-based experience. Readers are invited to move through the landscape with curiosity—listening closely, observing patterns, and engaging their senses in small, intentional ways.
The format is deliberately tactile and intimate. Printed and handheld, the zine resists speed and skimming. Each page pairs short narrative passages with simple, open-ended prompts, encouraging reflection rather than completion. The experience is less about arriving at answers and more about cultivating presence.
Custom illustrations accompany each section, acting as visual cues rather than literal depictions. They are meant to guide attention, set tone, and leave room for interpretation—mirroring the project’s broader goal of noticing without over-defining.
This project marks the beginning of an ongoing zine series. Future editions will be available for download, and will explore different environments and states of attention, using storytelling, illustration, and design as tools for quiet observation and reconnection.
